A boiler installation is often judged by the unit itself, but the parts that actually determine whether it's safe, compliant, and reliable for years to come are the ones most homeowners never see. A recent installation near Holborn, WC1N is a good example of everything that goes into doing it properly β not just fitting a new Vaillant ecoTEC, but the flue, the safety equipment, and the protection that goes around it.
Routing a rigid horizontal flue kit through an external wall involves core drilling through solid masonry, connecting all copper flow, return, and gas lines overhead, and fitting the condensate discharge pipe β each stage with its own compliance requirement. A poorly angled or badly sealed flue terminal is both a Gas Safe compliance failure and, more importantly, a safety risk: it's how combustion gases are safely vented away from the property, and getting the pitch and seal wrong undermines that from day one.
Every boiler installation we complete includes a carbon monoxide alarm fitted directly above the unit. This isn't a nice-to-have β it's a legal requirement under current Gas Safe regulations, and a genuine life-safety device. If your existing boiler was installed without one, it's worth having one fitted regardless of whether any other work is planned.
A Fernox TF1 magnetic filter was fitted inline on the central heating return pipework, directly above the boiler, with precision-bent and soldered copper runs and isolation valves either side of the housing. Without a filter, sludge and debris already circulating in the existing pipework accumulate inside the new boiler's heat exchanger from the very first winter, causing premature failure. Most manufacturers now require a system filter as a condition of the warranty β we fit one as standard on every installation regardless.
Where the flue penetrates the external masonry wall, fire-rated sealing and structural mortar are applied around the penetration β a Building Regulations requirement, not an optional finishing touch. Getting this wrong is both a safety risk and a reason a property can fail a Gas Safety inspection later. Every stage of this installation, from the core drilling to the final seal, was carried out to current Gas Safe and Building Regulations standards.
We are based in WC1N and cover Holborn, Bloomsbury, Islington, and all Central London postcodes for full boiler installation β see our Holborn WC1N area page for full details. Call 07472 251465 for a free installation quote.
Yes. Fitting a carbon monoxide alarm directly above the boiler is a legal requirement under current Gas Safe regulations, not an optional extra. If an existing boiler was installed without one, it's worth having one fitted regardless of any other planned work.
The flue is how combustion gases are safely vented away from the property. A poorly angled or badly sealed flue terminal is both a Gas Safe compliance failure and a genuine safety risk, so the core drilling, pitch, and sealing all have to meet current Gas Safe and Building Regulations standards.
