Why thermostatic valves fail this way

Left long enough, a worn valve can also mean the shower runs unexpectedly hot or cold, which is a genuine scalding or discomfort risk rather than just an inconvenience.

The repair

The chrome handle was removed to access the valve body, and the worn cartridge replaced with a new one matched to the exact valve model — thermostatic cartridges are not universal, and fitting the wrong one can leave the temperature regulation still faulty even after the part is replaced. Once fitted, the valve was reassembled, tested through a full range of temperature settings, and confirmed completely leak-free under normal water pressure.

A dripping or temperature-faulty shower valve rarely resolves on its own, and waiting typically means the fault gets worse and, in the case of a persistent internal drip, can eventually damage the surrounding tiling or wall structure — turning a straightforward cartridge replacement into a full retiling job if left too long.
