The government's Cold Weather Payment scheme reopens on 1 November 2026 and runs until 31 March 2027. It's a genuinely useful support for anyone already on a qualifying benefit - and a good natural prompt for everyone else to check their own heating can actually cope with the cold spells that trigger it.
A payment of £25 is triggered automatically whenever the average temperature in your area is recorded, or forecast, at zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. It can trigger more than once across the winter if there are several separate cold spells. There's nothing to apply for - if you're already receiving a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, the payment is made automatically into the same account, usually within 14 working days of the cold spell ending.
Eligibility depends on already receiving certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. It's worth checking the official eligibility list on GOV.UK directly, since this changes from year to year and we're not placed to give benefits advice - our interest here is purely the heating side of things.
The scheme only triggers because it's genuinely, officially cold enough to need extra support - exactly the conditions that expose a boiler that's been due a service, or a system that's never had scale or sludge protection fitted. If your heating struggles to keep up during a normal cold snap, a week of sub-zero temperatures is precisely when that becomes a real problem rather than a minor annoyance. Our autumn heating checklist covers the basics worth checking now, before the scheme's trigger conditions start showing up on the forecast.
