A residential property in Poplar, E14 was running on an ageing boiler that had been through several winters of intermittent faults and repair call-outs. After one breakdown too many, the owner decided a full replacement was the right move. Ralf completed the full Vaillant installation — including removal of the old unit, clean copper pipework, a system flush, and smart thermostat — in a single day.
Older boilers that have broken down more than once in a year, or are rated D or below on energy efficiency, are usually better value to replace than to continue repairing. The boiler in Poplar was over twelve years old, had accumulated a repair history that was adding up, and was consuming noticeably more gas than a modern equivalent unit would use.
Modern A-rated condensing boilers typically operate at over 90% efficiency. Older G-rated boilers — common in properties built or last upgraded before 2005 — run at around 65–70%. The difference is real and measurable: it translates directly into lower gas bills every month, every year. For many London homeowners, a new boiler pays for itself within a few years through reduced running costs alone, before you count the avoided repair bills.
Ralf gave an honest assessment of the existing unit before recommending replacement. If repair is the better financial decision, he says so. In this case, it was not.
Ralf arrived in the morning and completed the full installation the same day.
The old boiler was isolated, drained, disconnected, and removed first — taking the old unit off site as part of the job. The new Vaillant ecoFIT pure was then mounted in position and measured copper pipework runs were installed, each section fitted with clean compression joints and correctly supported with pipe clips. Nothing was left relying on the boiler’s own weight to hold pipework in place.
The system was thoroughly flushed to remove sludge and debris from the existing pipework before connecting to the new boiler. A Fernox TF1 magnetic filter was fitted to capture any residual particles and protect the new heat exchanger going forward. The Hive smart thermostat was installed, paired to the boiler, and confirmed working. Every radiator in the property was individually tested for heat output and the system balanced before the Gas Safe installation certificate was issued and handed over.
Some engineers install new boilers using plastic push-fit pipework because it is faster to fit. Ralf uses copper as standard for all boiler connections.
Copper is more durable under the cycles of heat and pressure that a central heating system goes through over years of operation. At the temperatures and pressures inside a modern combi boiler’s pipework, high-quality copper with properly soldered joints will outlast the boiler itself. It does not degrade in the same way that some plastic materials can at elevated temperatures over time.
Done well, copper pipework is also significantly cleaner in appearance — something that matters when a new boiler is the centrepiece of a recently fitted kitchen cupboard or utility room. The extra time that properly soldered copper requires is built into Ralf’s standard installation process, not offered as an upgrade.
The Vaillant ecoFIT pure is the most frequently installed boiler brand in Pristine Gas Ltd’s London work — not because of any commercial arrangement, but because it is reliable, parts are readily available across London, and it suits the flat and terraced house stock that makes up most of inner East London and Central London.
